Turkey travel after Istanbul: Cappadocia and the coast

A 10-day Turkey itinerary usually starts in Istanbul, then inland to Cappadocia or south to the coast. Ruins at Ephesus and Pamukkale if you have the days.

Ankara

The capital. A night if you are crossing inland — not a first-trip substitute for Istanbul.

Konya

Whirling dervishes and a stop between Cappadocia and the coast. Slow, religious, worthwhile.

Gaziantep

Pistachio, kebabs, baklava. The food city if you are already heading east toward Nemrut.

Mardin

Stone old town on a ridge, looking into Mesopotamia. Extra days, not a detour from the coast.

Bursa

First Ottoman capital, a ferry from Istanbul, and a mountain above the silk bazaar.

Safranbolu

Ottoman houses in a valley. A night on the way to the Black Sea, or a weekend from Ankara.

Kemer

Pine mountains and pebble beaches west of Antalya. A resort week, not a second Kaleiçi.

Datça

A slower peninsula than Marmaris: almond groves, Knidos, and bays that take a car.

Gallipoli

ANZAC sites on the peninsula. A day from Istanbul or Canakkale, then Troy if you keep going.

Kaş

Cliff town, diving, and a ferry to Kastellorizo. Kaş hotels book out in summer.

Kalkan

White houses on a steep bay. Quieter than Kaş, still a base for the Lycian Way.

Belek

Golf and long all-inclusive strips east of Antalya. Belek hotels for a resort week.

Dalyan

River boats, rock tombs, and the İztuzu turtle beach. A day from Marmaris, better as a night.

Kuşadası

The cruise port for Ephesus. Stay in Selçuk if you want the ruins at opening time.

Çeşme

Wind, Alaçatı, and a peninsula swim after Izmir. Izmir hotels if you need a city night first.

Best months for Turkey travel

April–June and September–October: Istanbul is walkable, the south is swimmable in autumn, and inland mornings are clearer. This is the 2026 default for a first trip.

Turkey travel in July and August

Hot inland, packed on the coast. Winter Istanbul is still beautiful in rain. Balloon mornings cancel more in January.

Turkey visa and e-Visa

Many passports enter visa-free or with an e-Visa. Check the official Turkish e-Visa site before you buy non-refundable flights. The visa guide covers who needs one and the copycat sites to avoid.

Turkey travel guide FAQ

How many days do I need in Turkey?

Seven days covers Istanbul plus one more place. Ten days lets you add the coast or inland. Two weeks is the comfortable version of the same trip.

Istanbul first, or somewhere else?

Most people fly into Istanbul, spend a few days, then continue inland or south. If you only have a long weekend, stay in the city.

Do I need a visa for Turkey?

Many passports enter visa-free or with an e-Visa. Check the official Turkish e-Visa site before you buy non-refundable flights.

Is a Cappadocia balloon ride worth it?

If you are already in Cappadocia, it is a strong morning — not the reason to skip Istanbul. Book a reputable operator with weather reclear.

What else besides Istanbul and Cappadocia?

Ephesus and Pamukkale are the usual next ruins. Antalya, Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Kaş, Bodrum, or Marmaris if you want water. Göreme for Cappadocia. Nemrut, Gaziantep, and Mardin if the trip is already two weeks and heading east.
