A 10-day Turkey itinerary that does not try to do five cities

Istanbul, Cappadocia, then the coast. That is the triangle that fits ten days. Add Ephesus or a fourth base and you will remember airports more than streets.

  • 3 basesNot five
  • Days 1–4Istanbul
  • Days 5–7Cappadocia
  • Days 8–10Fethiye or Antalya

The triangle that fits

Four nights Istanbul, two or three in Cappadocia, two or three on the Mediterranean. That is a ten-day trip once you count the days you fly between them. Turkey is larger than a Europe-shaped week assumes. The getting around page is blunt about it: every extra base costs a half-day, and those half-days are the trip.

A shorter version — city plus landscape, no coast — is the Istanbul–Cappadocia itinerary. Use that if you hate packing, or if you would rather give Istanbul a fifth night than squeeze in a beach. Use this page if the sea is part of why you booked the leave.

Install data before you fly. An eSIM is the boring booking that makes the airport and the ride-hail app work; details on Turkey eSIM.

Days 1–4: Istanbul

Land, get into a walkable neighbourhood, do not schedule Topkapı for the afternoon you arrive. Sultanahmet if the monuments are the point of the first morning; Galata or Karaköy if you want the city still awake after dinner. The neighbourhood argument is on Istanbul hotels.

A shape that works:

  • Day 1 — arrive, tram, a short walk, an early night. If you land before noon, Kadıköy by ferry is a gentler first afternoon than Hagia Sophia queues.
  • Day 2 — Sultanahmet: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, cistern, Topkapı if you booked a timed ticket. This is the heavy day. Eat away from the square.
  • Day 3 — Galata Bridge on foot, Karaköy, the tower, İstiklal if you can stand it, Balat if you cannot. Evening on the waterfront.
  • Day 4 — the water. Public Bosphorus ferry, not necessarily a paid cruise — see Bosphorus cruise — and time in Kadıköy if you skipped it on day 1.

Four nights means three full days plus arrival. Cutting this to two nights to “save time for Cappadocia” is the usual mistake. Cappadocia is compact. Istanbul is not.

Days 5–7: Cappadocia

Fly IST (or SAW, if that is really where the cheap domestic seat is) to Kayseri or Nevşehir in the morning of day 5. Hotel shuttle to Göreme. Do not drive Istanbul. The landscape needs two nights minimum so a cancelled balloon still leaves you a valley day — three nights if the balloon is a priority. Read Cappadocia balloons before you lock a single sunrise.

Working shape:

  • Evening of day 5 — sunset viewpoint, unpack, early bed if you fly at dawn.
  • Day 6 — balloon or a sunrise viewpoint, then valleys on foot (Rose, Pigeon, the open-air museum). Underground city if you still have legs.
  • Day 7 — spare balloon morning, or Uçhisar and a slower lunch, then an afternoon flight to the coast.

Stay in a cave hotel in Göreme unless you already know you want Uçhisar’s quieter ridge. Book the room before the balloon.

Days 8–10: Fethiye or Antalya

Pick one. Three nights is a taste of the water, not a tour of the Lycian coast.

Fethiye / Ölüdeniz if you want a lagoon, a harbour town, and the option of paragliding. Fly into Dalaman if you can; otherwise Antalya plus a long transfer is a poor last act. Sleep in Fethiye if you want restaurants; sleep in Ölüdeniz if you want to swim twice a day. Boat trip on one of the days. Do not add Kaş unless you drop Cappadocia or extend the trip.

Antalya if you want Kaleiçi, a museum, and Aspendos or Side as a day trip. The hop from Cappadocia to AYT is straightforward. Stay in the old town, not in a Lara resort, unless this last block is explicitly a pool holiday — in which case be honest and book the resort, not “Antalya.”

Day 10 is a flight home, probably via IST. Build the transfer. A 10pm international from Istanbul plus a 4pm domestic from Dalaman is how people cry in a security queue. Overnight in Istanbul on the last night is the calmer version if the connections are ugly — it costs a coast day.

The hops in between

Fly Istanbul–Cappadocia and Cappadocia–coast. The bus is comfortable and it is still ten hours. Book domestic seats early for summer Fridays; they are cheap until they are not. Match the airport to the hotel: SAW plus Sultanahmet is a long transfer you already paid for once.

Book the long-haul first. Flights into Turkey into IST, then the two domestic legs. Then the Istanbul hotel, then Göreme, then the coast. Reverse that order and you will fit hotels around a bad connection.

Open-jaw internationals — into IST, out of AYT or DLM — save a backtrack if you can find them. They are not always cheaper once you count the extra bag rules. Compare both.

What not to add

Ephesus, Pamukkale, Gallipoli, Nemrut, a night in Ankara. Each is a real place. Each is a different itinerary. Ten days with this triangle already uses every travel day it can spare.

If Ephesus is non-negotiable, drop the Mediterranean block and fly Istanbul–Izmir, with Selçuk as the base. If the coast is non-negotiable and you do not care about balloons, drop Cappadocia and give the days to Kaş. Do not keep all three plus Ephesus and then ask why you are tired.

April–June and September–October are the months this loop is pleasant in all three climates at once. July and August work if the last stop is the sea and you take Istanbul slowly in the morning. Winter works for Istanbul and Cappadocia and is a strange time to insist on Ölüdeniz.

Common questions

Is 10 days in Turkey enough?

Enough for Istanbul, Cappadocia and a taste of the coast. Not enough for a slow Lycian road trip, Ephesus and Pamukkale, and the east. Ten days with three bases is a good first trip. Ten days with six hotels is a bad one.

Should I do Istanbul or the coast first?

Istanbul first for most long-haul arrivals: you land where the international flights land, you walk off the jet lag in a city, then you fly inland and south. Ending on the coast is a kinder last night than a 4:30am balloon and a dash to IST.

Fethiye or Antalya for the last three nights?

Fethiye / Ölüdeniz if you want lagoon swimming and a harbour town. Antalya if you want an old town, Roman day trips, and a shorter hop from Cappadocia. Both work. Do not try to ‘do’ both in three nights.

Can I add Ephesus to a 10-day Turkey trip?

Only if you cut something. A common salvage is swapping the coast block for Izmir/Selçuk/Kuşadası. You cannot add a full Ephesus day to this triangle without turning a travel day into a blur. Pamukkale on the way is the same problem.

Do I need a car on this itinerary?

No for Istanbul and not for Göreme if you use tours and walking. Optional on the coast: useful for Kaş and the bays, unnecessary if you pick one resort or Fethiye town and use boats and dolmuş.
