Mediterranean beach and castle rock on the Alanya coast

Where to stay in Alanya: Kleopatra if you want to walk to the sand

The castle is a morning. The week is a beach. Kleopatra is the walkable strip. Mahmutlar and the east are longer, cheaper, more shuttle. The peninsula is the view, not the swim.

The one rule

Walk to Kleopatra, or admit you booked a different strip. The Alanya guide is the castle-and-beach argument. This page is which stretch of sand the suitcase lands on, because “Alanya” on a booking site includes a lot of coast.

Kleopatra and the harbour

Kleopatra Beach is the sandy west side of the peninsula, the one on the postcards, the one you can walk from a mid-rise hotel to a lounger without a timetable. Stay behind it if you want the castle as a morning and the harbour as an evening. Stay on the harbour if you like boats and noise.

The castle rock itself is geography, not a hotel district. A room up there is a view and a climb. Fine for two nights. A poor week if the brief was swimming.

Alanya hotels should be pinned on Kleopatra first. If the well-reviewed rooms are gone, move east along the same bay before you jump to Mahmutlar on price alone.

East strip and Mahmutlar

East of the peninsula, Keykubat and the long hotel road are the package product: more rooms, more all-inclusive, a promenade, a dolmuş back to town. This is a legitimate week. It is not a secret old town. Read whether the beach in front of the hotel is maintained, and whether “10 minutes to Alanya” is traffic-honest.

Mahmutlar is further still: popular, often better value, a place people return to. The castle becomes an outing. If that outing is one morning in seven, you will be fine. If you wanted to walk to the Red Tower after dinner, you will be annoyed.

Vs Antalya and Side

Antalya’s Kaleiçi is a city. Side’s peninsula is ruins. Alanya is a resort with a fortress on a rock. If the week is museums and Aspendos, book Antalya. If the week is a temple at sunset, book Side. If the week is sand plus one castle walk, stay on Kleopatra.

Kemer, west of AYT, is pebble and pine — a different strip again. Do not let a search for “Antalya coast hotels” mix them.

How to book it

Zoom to Kleopatra. Sort by recent rating. Read for “Mahmutlar,” “opposite the beach,” and which airport the transfer used. July and August are dense; May, June, September are the months the promenade is still a walk, not a shuffle. GZP saves road time when the fare is not wild; AYT is the hub if you are also seeing Kaleiçi.

Common questions

Where is the best area to stay in Alanya?

Kleopatra Beach and the streets behind it if you want to walk to the main sand and still reach the harbour and the castle. The east (Keykubat) strip if you want a long promenade of hotels and you do not mind a hop to the peninsula. Mahmutlar if the rate is the point and you accept a longer dolmuş.

Is Kleopatra Beach a good place to stay with children?

Yes: sand, a gentle shelf in places, a promenade, ice cream. It is busy in July and August. Hotels further east can be quieter and more all-inclusive. The castle is a hot walk — do it early, not as a midday outing with a pushchair.

Should I stay near Alanya harbour?

The harbour is lively, useful for boats, and louder at night. A few streets back or toward Kleopatra is the usual family compromise. The castle peninsula itself has views and limited beach; it is a poor choice if a daily swim was the brief.

Mahmutlar or Alanya centre?

Centre / Kleopatra for a first stay so the castle is easy. Mahmutlar for a longer, cheaper, more residential-resort week with a decent beach of its own. It is still Alanya district. It is not a walk to the Red Tower.

Gazipaşa or Antalya airport for the hotel?

GZP is about forty minutes and is the logical arrival if the fare is close. AYT is about two hours. A ‘cheap’ AYT flight plus a long coach can erase the saving. Check which airport the transfer quote assumes.
