Çeşme: the peninsula you swim on after Izmir
Alaçatı’s stone streets, a wind that kite-surfers pray for, and beaches that make Izmir feel inland. Stay here if the week is the water. Stay in Alsancak if Ephesus is still the job.

Why Çeşme
Çeşme is a peninsula west of Izmir, stuck out into the Aegean, with wind, thermal water at Ilıca, and a stone village — Alaçatı — that became the photograph of this coast. Izmir is the city that makes Ephesus easy. Çeşme is what you add when the week still needs a swim that is not a city beach.
It is fashionable in summer, windy on purpose (kite and windsurf at Alaçatı’s bay), and not a secret. Come for the water and the streets. Do not come expecting a cheap fishing town. That version left when the boutiques arrived, which is fine if you wanted the boutiques.
Alaçatı
Alaçatı is stone houses, bougainvillea, and a main street that is a restaurant queue after 8pm in August. Stay in the village if evenings are the point. Stay nearer the beach if you want to walk to the water in a towel. The two are close and not the same booking.
The wind is real. It is why the surfers are here, and why a hat on a terrace is not optional. If you wanted still, hot, Mediterranean water, look at Ilıca or at Bodrum’s sheltered bays instead of pretending Alaçatı’s bay is a lagoon.
Day-trippers from Izmir pack the streets at lunch. Overnight guests get the morning and the late sitting. That is the usual Turkish-town trick, and it still works.
Which beach
- Ilıca
- Long, shallow, warmer, families. Thermal seeps in places. The easy swim.
- Alaçatı bay
- Wind, kites, a scene. Better for watching and surfing than for a still morning dip.
- Altınkum / west coves
- Smaller, clearer, more of a drive or a boat. Worth it if you have a car and patience for the last kilometre.
- Çeşme town
- Harbour, fortress, ferry talk. A swim exists; it is not why the fortress is there.
A car makes the peninsula make sense. Dolmuş cover the main towns. In August, parking in Alaçatı is a hobby for people with better hobbies.
Çeşme vs Izmir vs Kuşadası
Izmir is the city: Kordon, bazaar, a base for Ephesus. Kuşadası is the cruise-and-beach town on the other side of the ruin. Çeşme is the peninsula holiday: swimming, villages, a wind, a more expensive dinner.
If the trip is Ephesus plus three beach days, Kuşadası is geographically kinder. If the trip is Izmir plus a fashionable swim, Çeşme is the correct peninsula. Do not commute daily between Alaçatı and the Library of Celsus. That is how you remember the İzmir ring road.
Where to sleep
Alaçatı stone hotels and houses for atmosphere. Ilıca for sand and families. Çeşme centre if the fortress and the harbour are your evenings. Read the map: “Çeşme” as a Booking destination includes a lot of peninsula.
Çeşme hotels in Alaçatı disappear first in July. Shoulder months are the version where you can still walk the street without a reservation for water. For a city night before or after, use Izmir hotels in Alsancak, not an airport box.
Getting there
Fly into Izmir (ADB), then an hour by transfer, bus or hire car. That hour is traffic in August. Build it in. The car hire page is relevant here in a way it is not in Istanbul.
From Izmir city, buses and dolmuş run all day. A day trip is possible. An overnight is the visit.
Common questions
Is Çeşme worth visiting?
Yes if you want Aegean swimming with a village attached, and you are already using Izmir airport. Alaçatı is the pretty bit; the beaches are the reason to stay more than a weekend. It is a weak choice if you only wanted Ephesus — stay in Selçuk or Izmir for that.
Alaçatı or Çeşme town?
Alaçatı for stone streets, restaurants, and a fashionable crowd in summer. Çeşme town for a working harbour, the fortress, and the ferry toward Chios. Ilıca for families and a long shallow beach. Most visitors who came for ‘Çeşme’ actually wanted Alaçatı plus a beach.
How many days in Çeşme?
Three nights is a taste; five is a holiday. A day trip from Izmir is possible and tiring — you will do Alaçatı’s main street and one swim, then sit in traffic home.
Is Alaçatı very expensive?
In July and August, yes relative to the rest of the Aegean: boutique hotels, design restaurants, a wind that everyone else also discovered. May, June, September are still busy and more humane. Winter is quiet and partly shut.
Can I visit Ephesus from Çeşme?
You can, and you will not enjoy the round trip. Ephesus is on the other side of Izmir. Sleep in Selçuk or Izmir for the ruins; use Çeşme for the water.
