Honey-coloured stone houses of Mardin’s old town on the ridge

Destination guide

Mardin: a stone city on a ridge, looking into the plain

Honey-coloured houses stacked on a slope, Syriac churches, and a terrace view that faces Mesopotamia rather than the sea. Come when the trip already includes the east. Do not come as a day trip from the coast.

Why Mardin

Mardin sits on a ridge above the Mesopotamian plain. The old town is honey-coloured limestone, piled on itself, with Syriac churches, a mosque, and terraces that look south toward a landscape most coastal holidays never see. That view is the point. The souvenir silver is not.

It is a second-trip destination. If you have ten days in Turkey, spend them on Istanbul, Cappadocia and a coast. If you have extra nights and a willingness to fly east, Mardin is one of the few places that still feels like a city rather than a resort with a castle bolted on.

Read current travel advice. Mardin is open, visited, and photographed. It is also not Kaş. Dress for a conservative provincial city. Do not treat the Syrian border as a sightseeing opportunity.

The old town

Stay in eski Mardin — the historic core on the slope. Yeni Mardin, the newer city on the plain, has shops and hospitals and none of the reason you came.

Walk without a checklist for the first afternoon. The lanes are stepped, shaded, and easy to over-tour with a guide who recites dynasties. Zinciriye Madrasa, the Ulu Cami area, and a terrace café at the end of the day will do more than a forced march past every carved door. Churches still function; behave as a guest, not as a set dresser.

The stone photographs well at the beginning and end of the day. Midday in July is a white oven. That is when the museum, a long lunch, or a nap earns its keep.

What to do with the days

Two nights, two jobs:

  • The town itself — lanes, a madrasa, a church if it is open, baklava that will not match Gaziantep and does not need to, sunset on a terrace facing the plain.
  • Deyrulzafaran — the Syriac monastery a short drive east. Go with a driver or a small tour. It is a working religious site. Midyat, further on, is another stone town and a longer day; only add it if you like the first one.

Do not invent a third ancient site because the map is dense. Hasankeyf’s landscape changed with the dam. Ask locally what is actually visitable rather than copying a 2015 blog.

With Gaziantep and Nemrut

Gaziantep is food and mosaics. Nemrut is a summit at unsocial hours. Mardin is a ridge and a walk. They share an eastward flight from Istanbul and almost nothing else.

A working east pair is Gaziantep plus Nemrut, or Gaziantep plus Mardin. All three in four nights is a driving holiday. If you only have two spare nights after Cappadocia, pick one city and skip the mountain, or pick the mountain and skip Mardin.

Where to sleep

Book a restored stone house in the old town with a terrace. Stairs are part of the architecture; lifts are not. Read reviews for noise (narrow streets, wedding convoys) and for whether “old town” on the listing is actually halfway down toward the new city.

Mardin hotels in the historic core fill on spring and autumn weekends. Summer is hotter than the coast photographs imply. Winter is quiet and can be cold at night. You are not here for a pool.

Getting there

Fly into Mardin (MQM). The airport sits on the plain; the old town is a taxi ride up. Domestic connections run via Istanbul and sometimes Ankara. There is no useful version of this as a bus add-on to a Antalya week.

From Gaziantep the road is several hours. Do it as a travel day, not as a morning excursion. Details for domestic flights sit on flights to Turkey and getting around.

Common questions

Is Mardin worth visiting?

Yes if you want a historic stone town rather than another harbour, and you have already done Istanbul and a coast or Cappadocia. Two nights in the old town are the visit. It is not worth a same-day flight from Antalya.

How many days in Mardin?

Two nights: one for the lanes, zinciriye, the terrace view and dinner; one for Deyrulzafaran or Midyat if you still have energy. One night is a sunset and a sense you missed the morning light on the stone.

Is Mardin safe to visit in 2026?

The old town is a established visitor destination with hotels, restaurants and a police presence. It is also in south-east Turkey. Read current government travel advice for Mardin province before you book, dress conservatively, and treat this as a city stay, not a border road trip.

Mardin or Gaziantep if I only have two extra nights?

Gaziantep if you care about food and a museum, and you might add Nemrut. Mardin if you care about architecture and a view. They are not interchangeable, and stacking both plus Nemrut in a long weekend is how you see three car parks.

Do I need a car in Mardin?

Not for the old town — you will walk, and you will walk uphill. Yes if you want Deyrulzafaran, Midyat or villages on your own timetable. Taxis and organised half-days exist; parking in the lanes does not, in any useful sense.
