Marmaris boat trips: Dalyan, Cleopatra, or a day of bays
The sheltered water is why this bay exists as a holiday. Pick the day for the landscape, then the boat for the passenger count. İçmeler pickup is normal; a party deck is optional.

Which trip to book
Marmaris is a boat town. The bay is almost enclosed, the pine comes down to the water, and the days people remember are not Long Beach. They are off the side of a gulet in a cove you cannot drive to. The Marmaris guide places those trips in the wider stay. This page is which ticket to buy.
Three products cover almost every desk:
- Dalyan
- Coach or boat to the river, Lycian rock tombs, İztuzu sandbar, usually sulphur mud. The day with a plot. Best first booking.
- Cleopatra Island (Sedir)
- Out into the Gulf of Gökova. Protected coarse sand, modest ruins, stricter rules. Longer, less “party.”
- Bay-hopping / ‘12 islands’
- Leave Marmaris marina, stop at named coves (Paradise, Aquarium, Phosphorus Cave and their cousins), lunch on board, swim, repeat. Lowest narrative, highest swimming.
If you only take one trip, take Dalyan. If you have two spare days, add a small-boat bay day, not a second big coach. If you wanted the river as a place to stay, sleep in Dalyan and do İztuzu without the Marmaris timing.
Dalyan and İztuzu
You leave the bay, cross to the Dalyan delta, and switch to a river boat that threads reed beds under tombs cut into the cliff. The sandbar at İztuzu is a loggerhead turtle nesting beach: long, windswept, managed. In nesting season there are zones you do not plant umbrellas in, and you do not chase wildlife for a photograph. The mud baths on many itineraries are optional, sulphurous, and exactly as glamorous as sitting in grey clay sounds. People still enjoy them.
It is a long day — hotel pickup is early, return is late afternoon. Children manage it if they can handle sun and sitting. Anyone who wanted a gentle two-hour harbour potter will find it a lot of logistics for the swimming they actually get.
The trade versus staying in Dalyan: from Marmaris you get the highlight reel without changing hotels. You also get a timetable and a group. If the tombs and the turtles are the reason you came to this coast, the overnight in Dalyan is quieter at dawn and you can walk the river without a wristband.
Cleopatra Island
Sedir Island sits in the Gulf of Gökova, north-west of Marmaris. The famous bit is the sand: coarse, pale, protected. You are not meant to lie on it as if it were a free sunbed park, and you are not meant to take it home. Wardens exist because visitors previously treated the beach as a souvenir. Swim, look at the small ruins, stay on the marked areas, leave the sand where it is.
The day is more about the gulf than about a single beach photo. It is usually a longer run than the inner-bay hop, which means more time on the water and a bit more chance of chop if the wind is up. If anyone in the group gets seasick, this is the trip to be honest about, not the sheltered circuit inside Marmaris bay.
Cleopatra Island trips from Marmaris overlap in marketing with Bodrum-side Gökova days. You do not need to transfer to Bodrum for this one if you are already in the bay. You might prefer Bodrum if the rest of the week is peninsula villages rather than İçmeler.
12-island and bay days
The name is elastic. Some boats list twelve stops; most do a handful of swimming coves and a lunch anchorage. Paradise Island, Aquarium Bay and Phosphorus Cave are the names you will hear at the marina. The water is the point. The cave is a ten-minute novelty. Lunch is grilled meat, pasta, salad, and fruit, at a standard that tracks how many people are on the boat more than the menu card.
This is the right day if you want to swim three times, doze, and not think about tombs. It is a weak day if you already did a similar hop in Fethiye last Tuesday — Fethiye’s 12-island (or 12-island-style) product is a different geography, but the rhythm is cousinly. Do not collect both unless you really like grilled chicken at sea.
Sunset and “pirate” evening boats exist. They are drinks and a soundtrack. Fine once. Not a substitute for Dalyan.
Pay for fewer people. The large multi-deck boats and the 12-person gulet can leave the same marina for the same named bays. The day is not the same. Music you did not choose is the tell.
Small gulet vs party boat
Look at passenger numbers and the photo of the deck, not the word “luxury.” A wooden gulet with a dozen people and a shaded net at the bow is the Marmaris day worth a little extra. A floating nightclub with a water slide is a valid holiday for someone else.
Check: lunch included (almost always), drinks (often extra, sometimes a bar tab that stings), snorkel kit (bring your own mask if you care), and whether “unlimited tea” is the hospitality or the whole drinks package. Cash bars on board are normal. So is a hard sell on photographs.
Private charters exist for families who want to set the stops. They cost more and they remove the stranger-with-a-speaker variable. For two adults, a small shared boat is usually enough.
İçmeler pickup and practicalities
If you are staying in İçmeler or Turunç, you do not need to dolmuş into Marmaris marina at 8am unless the operator is unusually lazy. Pickup is standard on Dalyan days (often a minibus, because the river is a road transfer as well as a boat) and common on marina boats (water taxi or minibus to the quay). Get the time in writing. Resort breakfast will still be putting out the eggs.
Season is roughly May to October. In late October a lot of boats tie up. In June and September you get the water without the August density. Wear something you can swim in; take a light cover-up for the tombs and any village stop; assume the sun on the water is worse than the same sun on Kleopatra Beach.
Compare Marmaris boat trips by itinerary and group size, then keep the hotel where you wanted the evenings — Marmaris and İçmeler stays both work. Book Dalyan first if it is the reason you chose this coast. The generic bay day can be bought two nights out. The good small boats in July cannot.
Common questions
What is the best boat trip from Marmaris?
Dalyan, for most people: river, Lycian tombs in the cliff, İztuzu Beach, usually the mud baths. Cleopatra Island (Sedir) if you want a Gulf of Gökova day and that strange coarse sand. The standard ‘12 islands’ or aquarium-bay hop if you simply want to swim off a boat and eat grilled chicken on deck.
Do boats pick up from İçmeler?
Yes. Most day boats and Dalyan coaches include İçmeler and often Turunç. You do not need to stay in Marmaris town to join. Confirm the pickup window when you book — it is earlier than a resort breakfast likes.
Small boat or the big party boat?
Smaller gulet if you care about swimming in quiet water and a lunch that is not a tray war. The large multi-deck boats visit similar bays with a sound system. They are a different holiday. Pay a bit more for fewer people; it changes the day more than a ‘VIP’ sticker on a 200-person deck.
Is the Dalyan trip suitable for children?
Yes, with caveats: a long day, sun, and a river boat that is not a theme-park ride. İztuzu is a turtle nesting beach with rules (no umbrellas in the nesting zone in season, no crowding the turtles). The mud baths are optional and messy in a way children usually enjoy.
Marmaris boats or Fethiye / Bodrum instead?
This bay is the sheltered, pine-backed version. Fethiye’s 12-island day is a different set of stops further east. Bodrum’s peninsula boats are more village-to-village. If you are already in Marmaris, take the trip from here rather than transferring for a similar swim.
