Seven days in Istanbul and Cappadocia: four nights, then the valleys
This is the short Turkey trip that actually works: enough Istanbul to walk, a cheap flight inland, two or three Cappadocia mornings so the balloon can cancel once.
- 4 + 3Nights, Istanbul then Göreme
- 90 minIST/SAW → ASR/NAV
- 2 morningsBalloon buffer
- No coastThat needs more days
The 7-day shape
Four nights in Istanbul, three in Cappadocia. That is the itinerary. It looks uneven on a map and it is the one that feels right on the ground. Istanbul is a city you walk until you are tired; Cappadocia is a landscape whose two best hours sit at sunrise and late afternoon. One night inland is how balloon cancellations ruin a holiday. Two city nights is how you see Hagia Sophia and a bazaar and nothing that makes Istanbul worth the long-haul.
A workable calendar:
- Nights 1–4 — Istanbul. Land, sleep in a walkable neighbourhood, give the city three full days.
- Morning of day 5 — fly to Kayseri or Nevşehir. Hotel shuttle to Göreme. Valleys in the afternoon.
- Nights 5–7 — Cappadocia. Balloon on morning 6 (or 7 if 6 blows out). Walk the valleys. Underground city if you have the appetite.
- Day 8 — fly home from ASR/NAV, or back through Istanbul if that is the international ticket.
If your international flight home is from Istanbul, you either book the Cappadocia flight as a self-contained return (days 5–8) or you swallow a last hop back to IST/SAW. Count that extra flight as part of the cost of the week, not as a surprise on day 7. The 10-day Turkey itinerary is what you want if a third stop is non-negotiable.
Do not reverse the split. Two nights in Istanbul and four in Göreme is the brochure version. You will leave the city unfinished and sit in a small valley town wondering what to do with the fifth sunset. The Istanbul guide is built around three to four nights for a reason.
Istanbul first
Land, get to the hotel, do not schedule a palace on the evening you arrive. The first full day is Sultanahmet. The second is Galata, the bridge, and a neighbourhood that is still awake after dinner. The third is water: a public ferry, Kadıköy if you have the legs. That is a week of Istanbul compressed into the time you have. It is enough. It is not “done.”
Stay where you can walk to a tram. The hotel decision is on the Istanbul hotels page; it matters more on a short trip because you cannot afford a bad neighbourhood. Book IST or SAW with the hotel in mind — crossing the city to save on a fare is a poor use of day four, which you would rather spend in a mosque courtyard than in a taxi.
Eat away from the monument doors. Get an Istanbulkart on arrival. That is the city, in the time you have.
The flight inland
Istanbul to Kayseri or Nevşehir is about ninety minutes in the air and the only rational transfer on a seven-day trip. The overnight bus is ten to eleven hours. Save it for a month with more nights. Check domestic dates once the Istanbul hotel is fixed, and match the airport: a cheap Pegasus out of SAW is not cheap if you slept in Sultanahmet and you now have a dawn crossing of the city.
Kayseri (ASR) usually wins on frequency and price. Nevşehir (NAV) wins on distance to Göreme. Nearly every cave hotel runs a shuttle from both; confirm which airport when you book the room, not in the arrivals hall. The shuttle is an hour-ish from ASR, less from NAV, and it is calmer than a taxi negotiation after a domestic hop.
Book a morning flight on day 5 if the schedule exists. An 8pm arrival means you have spent a night of the precious three on a transfer. The balloon does not care that you were tired; the weather might still cancel it.
Cappadocia with a spare dawn
Two nights is the working minimum; three is what this itinerary is for. Read the Cappadocia guide for valleys and underground cities. The only extra rule on a week-long trip: the balloon sits on a morning that is not your last.
Book a licensed operator, put the flight on morning two, and keep morning three as the reclear. Pickup will be around 4:30am. You will be tired. That is the deal. If you skip the balloon, you still needed two mornings — one for a viewpoint sunrise, one for a valley walk before the heat. The hot air balloon page is the worth-it argument; this itinerary is the calendar that makes a cancellation survivable.
Stay in Göreme unless you already know you want Uçhisar’s quieter ridge. Göreme cave hotels are the density, the restaurants, and the pickup. Check for a window and for stairs. You will not have time to move hotels inland. One booking, three nights, done.
Walk Rose or Red Valley in the late afternoon of day 5 or 6. Do one underground city, not two. Take water. That is a proper Cappadocia stay, balloon or not.
What this trip is not
It is not Ephesus. It is not Pamukkale. It is not a beach. Adding any of those on a seventh day is how you spend a night in a bus station and see a terrace in a car park at noon. If the coast is the point, you needed the ten-day version, or you needed to drop Cappadocia — which most first-timers should not do, because the valleys are the inland half of why people come.
It is also not a loop you drive. A car in Istanbul is a mistake. A car in Cappadocia is optional. Fly the long hop. Walk both ends. That is the seven-day trip.
Common questions
How many days in Istanbul and Cappadocia for a week?
Four nights Istanbul, three nights Cappadocia is the split that respects both. Three and two leaves you short in the city and with only one balloon morning. Five and one is how people go home bitter about wind. Do not invert it: Cappadocia does not need more nights than Istanbul on a first trip.
Which airport for Cappadocia — Kayseri or Nevşehir?
Kayseri (ASR) has more flights and is usually cheaper. Nevşehir (NAV) is closer to Göreme and has fewer schedules. Hotel shuttles serve both. Book the flight that matches your Istanbul airport (IST or SAW) rather than saving a few pounds on a cross-city connection.
Should I fly to Cappadocia in the morning or the evening?
Morning, if you can. You want a first afternoon in the valleys and a first night in the cave hotel, with the balloon ticket sitting on the next dawn. An evening arrival burns a night and puts pressure on a single morning. The overnight bus exists; it is a budget choice, not a better one on a seven-day trip.
Can I do the balloon on a 7-day Istanbul–Cappadocia trip?
Yes, if you stay two full mornings in Cappadocia. Book the flight for your first morning there, or the second, never the morning you leave. Weather cancels the field. That cancellation is why the third night exists.
Is seven days enough to add Ephesus or the coast?
Not without gutting Istanbul or Cappadocia. A ten-day itinerary is the point at which a third base becomes reasonable. On seven days, two bases. The coast will still be there.
