Where to stay for Ephesus: Selçuk town, not the cruise port
Selçuk is the small town next to the stones. Sleep here if the ruins are the point. Sleep in Kuşadası if the beach is the week. Sleep in Izmir if you wanted a city.

The one rule
If Ephesus is the point, sleep in Selçuk. The Ephesus guide already says this. This page is which part of the little town, and when the pretty village up the hill is a trap. Cruise-port hotels that rank for “Ephesus” are in Kuşadası. That is a different stay.
Selçuk town
Stay within a walk of the aqueduct and the central streets. Pensions and small hotels are the local grammar: courtyard breakfast, a roof, a family at reception. You want to eat without a car, and you want a taxi or dolmuş at 8am for the gate.
Rooms facing the main road are cheaper and louder. Rooms a lane back are the ones that make a one-night stay feel like a visit. Selçuk hotels should be searched as Selçuk, not as Ephesus-the-ancient-city, which is a ruin with a car park.
The Basilica of St John, İsa Bey Mosque, and the Ephesus Museum are in town. That is the afternoon after a morning on the marble street, not a reason to book a resort ten kilometres away.
Şirince
Şirince is a restored hill village, fruit wine, and a main street that fills with day-trippers. Overnight it is quieter and prettier. It is also a drive from Ephesus, with limited restaurants after the last coach leaves, and a road you will not enjoy in the dark if you do not have a car.
Stay there on purpose, as a village night. Do not stay there because a photo looked more “authentic” than Selçuk’s storks, then discover the 8am ruin start is a taxi you forgot to book.
Vs Kuşadası and Izmir
- Selçuk
- Ruins-first, small town, cheapest useful stay, early gate.
- Kuşadası
- Beach, bigger hotels, cruise mornings. Ephesus as an outing.
- Izmir
- City, Kordon, Çeşme option. Ephesus as a day trip. See Izmir hotels.
Pamukkale is the usual pairing, not a Selçuk suburb. Sleep here, then move inland — do not add Hierapolis as a same-day marathon after the terrace houses.
How to book it
Zoom to Selçuk centre. Sort by recent rating. Read for “walk to restaurants,” “otogar,” and whether they will call a taxi for Ephesus. One well-reviewed pension beats a three-star on the highway toward Kuşadası.
If you want a guide and skip-the-line timing from a city hotel, compare Ephesus tours rather than forcing Selçuk to be a resort.
Common questions
Is Selçuk the best place to stay for Ephesus?
Yes if the ruins are the reason you are on this coast. The town is a few kilometres from the gate, with storks on the Roman aqueduct, cheap rooms, and an early start. Kuşadası is better if you want a beach week with Ephesus as one morning. Izmir is better if you want a city.
How far is Ephesus from Selçuk hotels?
About three kilometres to the main (lower) entrance. Dolmuş, taxi, bicycle, or a hot walk. You do not need a full-day tour from here unless you want a guide and the terrace houses bundled. Independent is the usual pattern.
Should I stay in Şirince instead of Selçuk?
Şirince is a pretty hill village with wine and day-trip crowds. Stay there if you want village quiet after 6pm and you have a car or a taxi budget. Stay in Selçuk if you want to walk to food and be closer to the ruins and the station.
How many nights in Selçuk?
One night is the classic: arrive, basilica and museum, early Ephesus, move on. Two if you add Şirince, the beach at Pamucak, or you refuse to rush the terrace houses. Three is for people who like small towns, not for a first Turkey loop.
Can I do Ephesus as a day trip and skip Selçuk hotels?
Yes from Izmir or Kuşadası. You will share the site with more groups, especially from the port. The Ephesus tours page covers that version. The overnight in Selçuk is how you see the marble street before the cruise clocks start.
