Side: a resort town that still has a Roman city in it

You walk to dinner through a theatre and a colonnade. That is the point of Side. The all-inclusive strip east of town is a different holiday that happens to share a name.

Ruins in the town

Side is unusual on this coast because the ancient city was not parked outside the resort. It is the resort. The peninsula holds a Roman theatre, an agora, a colonnaded street, and a harbour, and then it holds ice-cream shops, menus in five languages, and hotels that back onto the same stones. That mix is either charming or exhausting, depending on how you feel about souvenir bronze at 10pm.

Walk it in the morning. The theatre is the building to pay for: a proper cavea, still used, still a shock of scale after a street of restaurants. The rest of the peninsula is a wandering exercise — you are never far from the water, and you are never far from someone asking if you want a boat. That is the honest texture of Side town. It is not a quiet archaeological park. It is a working holiday town sitting on a classical street plan.

The Antalya museum holds better sculpture than you will see on the peninsula. Come to Side for the fact you can swim, eat, and walk through a theatre in the same afternoon, not for the most scholarly ruin in Turkey. Ephesus it is not. That is fine, as long as you knew.

Temple of Apollo

Five standing columns on the point, sea on three sides, sunset if the sky cooperates. That is the Temple of Apollo, and it is the image Side exists to sell. Go. It is a short walk from the harbour, it is smaller than the posters, and it is still the right place to be at the end of the day.

It is also crowded, photographed constantly, and ringed with people waiting for the same orange light. Arrive before the sun drops and accept you are sharing it. The better photograph is often ten minutes later, when the tour groups have moved towards dinner and the stone goes pink rather than gold.

There is a temple of Athena beside it, less complete, same platform. You do not need a guide for this part of town. You need decent shoes for the broken marble, and a bit of patience.

Town vs the east strip

Old peninsula / Side town
Walk to Apollo, the theatre, the harbour. Smaller hotels, more noise, more atmosphere. The stay if ruins are why you picked Side.
East beaches / Kumköy
Longer sand, larger hotels, all-inclusive the default. A shuttle or a taxi to the ruins. The stay if the pool is why you picked Side.
West / Clearwater side
A bit quieter, still a beach product, still not Kaleiçi. Fine if you found a well-reviewed room and you do not need the peninsula at 7am.

Search Side hotels on a map, not by star rating. “Side” as a Booking destination includes a lot of coast that is a twenty-minute vehicle ride from the temple. If you want to walk home from Apollo, the pin has to sit on the peninsula. If you want a kids’ club and a long shallow beach, the east strip is the honest product — closer in spirit to Antalya all-inclusive than to a town stay.

Belek is the next resort west, even more purpose-built, with golf. Alanya is further east: a bigger castle town, a different scale. Side sits between a city (Antalya) and those two products. That is its useful position, and also why the branding is messy.

Side vs Antalya

Stay in Antalya if you want Kaleiçi, the museum, Konyaaltı and Lara as options, and day trips that run west as well as east. Stay in Side if your week is beach plus one or two ruins and you would rather not sit in city traffic. Aspendos — the best-preserved Roman theatre in the region — is an easy hop from either; it is not a reason to pick Side on its own.

Antalya is a city that happens to have a coast. Side is a coast town that happens to have a city underneath it. If you try to use Side as a base for Kaş or Fethiye you will spend the holiday on the D400. Those belong further west.

Package prices in Side can look lower than Kaleiçi boutiques. Factor the transfers, the tourist menus on the peninsula, and whether you actually eat outside the hotel. An all-inclusive east of town can be the cheaper week once you stop paying for every lemonade on the harbour.

How to use the days

A workable few days: peninsula and Apollo on day one, beach on day two, Aspendos and a look at the aqueduct on day three. Manavgat waterfalls appear on every excursion board; they are a short outing, heavily built up, and skippable if you came for marble rather than a café deck over water. Boat trips along this stretch are fine swimming days, not Kekova.

From AYT you want a pre-booked car unless you hired for the week — Side is about an hour east, in the same direction as Belek. South-coast tours from here are mostly Aspendos, waterfalls, and Antalya city. Use them for the sites you cannot be bothered to drive; walk the peninsula yourself.

Evenings in town are loud by Turkish old-quarter standards and mild by Magaluf standards. If you want silence, you booked the wrong peninsula, or you should have taken a room set back from the harbour restaurants.

Common questions

Is Side worth visiting, or is it just a package resort?

The peninsula town is worth it: a Roman theatre, a colonnaded street you use as a pavement, and the Temple of Apollo on the point. The hotel strip towards Kumköy and the east beaches is a package resort that uses Side as a brand. Both exist. Book the one you actually want.

Side or Antalya for a first Turkey coast stay?

Antalya if you want a real city, Kaleiçi, and day trips in several directions. Side if you want a beach holiday with ruins under your feet and you are happy in a smaller, more tourist-priced town. They are an hour apart; they are not interchangeable.

How many days do you need in Side?

Three nights covers the peninsula, a beach day, and Aspendos. A week is the package-stay length, and it only works if you like repeating the same harbour walk. Two nights is enough if Side is a stop between Antalya and Alanya rather than the holiday.

Is Side a good all-inclusive destination?

The east of Side is built for it: large hotels, long beaches, evening shows. Stay in town if you want restaurants you choose yourself. The all-inclusive page for the Antalya coast is the wider comparison; Side town is the weaker all-inclusive product and the stronger old-town product.

How far is Side from Antalya Airport?

Roughly 60–70 kilometres east, about an hour by road, longer in traffic. It is not a city tram ride. Pre-book a transfer unless you are hiring a car for the whole week.
