Istanbul airport transfers: IST and SAW are different jobs

The city has two airports on opposite sides of town. The right transfer is the one that matches the airport you actually land at and the neighbourhood you actually sleep in.

  • ISTEuropean side, long-haul
  • SAWAsian side, low-cost
  • M11 / M4Metro exists
  • Night landingPre-book a car

From IST (Istanbul Airport)

IST is north of the European side, large, and the default long-haul door. It is not close to Sultanahmet, Galata or Taksim. Anyone promising “twenty minutes to the old city” is selling something else.

  • M11 metro — cheapest sensible option. You will change. Fine with a backpack in daylight; grim with two suitcases and a pushchair at midnight.
  • Havaist — airport buses to the main districts, set fare, luggage underneath. Slower in traffic, easier than the metro with bags.
  • Pre-booked car — meet-and-greet, fixed price, door to the hotel. This is what tired first-timers should buy.

Which neighbourhood you booked changes the drop: Sultanahmet hotels are a longer ride than Karaköy; Kadıköy from IST is a cross-city trip. If you have not picked a base yet, read where to stay in Istanbul before you book the car.

From SAW (Sabiha Gökçen)

SAW sits on the Asian side. It is the low-cost airport, and it is the wrong airport for a short old-city stay unless the fare gap is large and you accept the transfer.

The M4 metro now reaches it. You still have a ferry or a long road into Sultanahmet. For Kadıköy, SAW is suddenly reasonable. For a 10pm arrival and a Galata hotel, book the car and do not pretend the metro is romantic.

Full airport logic — fares, airlines, which hotel pairs with which — is on IST vs SAW.

When a private car wins

Night landings. Families. Mobility issues. A group splitting the fare. A hotel uphill from Galata Tower. Any combination of those.

Book a named transfer with the flight number, so they track delays. Pay a fixed price. Do not negotiate with someone holding a handwritten sign in the hall unless you enjoy the extra plot line.

Install data first. A Turkey eSIM means you can message the driver and follow the route. Then compare private IST transfers for the hotel neighbourhood you actually booked.

Time and money

Budget more wall-clock time than the map. IST to Sultanahmet is often 60–90 minutes by car, longer at rush hour. SAW to Sultanahmet is often longer. Metro is cheaper and can match the car when traffic is bad, if you can handle the changes.

Havaist sits in the middle: cheaper than a private car, simpler than the metro with luggage. If you land in daylight and you are two adults with roll-aboards, start there.

What to do on landing

eSIM already on. Istanbulkart from a machine if you are taking metro or bus — one card can be shared. Ignore anyone who approaches you between baggage and the official taxi rank. If you have a driver, they will be in the arrivals meeting area with your name, not outside smoking by a van.

If your onward plan is a same-day domestic hop to Cappadocia, do not land at SAW unless that domestic flight also leaves from SAW. Crossing Istanbul to catch a connection is how people miss Göreme. Book the flights as a pair of airports that agree with each other.

Common questions

How do I get from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Sultanahmet?

The M11 metro plus a tram change works in daylight and takes around 90 minutes. Havaist buses run to the old city. A pre-booked private transfer is the simple version, especially after dark or with luggage. Allow more time than the map suggests.

How long is SAW to Sultanahmet?

Plan on 90 minutes to well over two hours depending on traffic and whether you use metro plus ferry/tram or a car across the city. SAW is on the Asian side; the old city is not. This is why a cheap SAW fare can be a poor Sultanahmet plan.

Is there a metro from IST?

Yes. The M11 runs from Istanbul Airport toward the city. You will still change for Sultanahmet. It is the cheapest decent option if you can handle stairs, tickets and luggage.

Havaist or a taxi?

Havaist is a set-fare airport bus to major districts. Taxis from the rank work if you insist on the meter or use a ride-hailing app with a price on screen. Random curb touts are how people overpay.

Should I book an airport transfer in advance?

Yes if you land after 9pm, have children, have more bags than you want to lift onto a metro, or simply do not want to problem-solve after a long-haul. Daytime, one backpack, comfortable with cities — metro or Havaist is enough.
